Cell phones: "access after 16 years" activists in Spain demand

A Telegram chat group from the PobleNou district of Barcelona, ”Poblenou_adolescència livre de mobilis”, has started a movement whose activists believe that “children should have adolescence without mobile phones.”

The initiative, which started in Spain, is spreading throughout Europe. Despite the fact that most people would most likely like the telephone to be only the privilege of adults, mobile phones have now become a part of the lives of even children. There are some positives to this, but many more negatives. Supporters of the movement, residents of Barcelona, who decided to “take matters into their own hands,” are shouting about this “to the whole world.” Their goal is Delay children’s access to smartphones as much as possible.

In just four days since the announcement of the Catalan initiative, a large group has been created, joined by families from provinces such as Castile, Alava, Navarre, Balearic Islands, Alicante, Almeria, Cadiz, Malaga, Granada, Huelva, Jaen, Seville. The number of subscribers is increasing every day. Their goal, as the families say, is to unite in order to be able to carry out actions aimed at delaying the use of smartphones by children under 16 years of age.

A new movement is promoting the idea of not using cell phones as teenagers. The point is to find a solution – a legal way to stop the penetration of smartphones into the minds of unprepared children.

Information now passes through the mobile phone. For anyone and everyone. But the question is How prepared are children to cope with what – both good and bad – a mobile phone has to offer?. These are all topics that are already being commented on on social networks, and what result this will have is unknown. This is a matter of upbringing, the culture of upbringing, and all parents should treat this the same way.

Children stop doing other things. Many children in aged 6 to 10 years already have a mobile phone. The group notes, “We need to educate our children about the possibilities and dangers of technology.”

Families and teachers in Barcelona and across Spain are already uniting to stop the spread of the phenomenon of giving children smartphones at age 12, which coincides with entry into high school, and delaying until age 16.

Elizabeth García Permanier, a supporter of the group, stressed the importance of this initiative to ensure that children do not have cell phones until a more mature stage, at which time they will be “more prepared.”

The mother of three children, ages 7, 9, and 10, explained that the idea for the group came after listening to the concerns of other mothers who had decided to give cell phones to their children while their children were playing in the park “so they wouldn’t be bullied in class.” , considering him a loser just because he doesn’t have a cell phone.”

From here, a WhatsApp group for “meetings” and information exchange, “Teenagers of Poblenou without mobile phones”, emerged last October, joined by families and teachers from all areas of Barcelona and Spain and which already has thousands of members.

Over the course of a few days, “spontaneously and without any effort,” the group grows, so “we saw that there was a hidden problem” in the “institutionalized use of smartphones at a young age.” “Families are very concerned,” said a supporter of the initiative, noting that speeches and events about the initiative will begin immediately.

The question is what the children themselves will say and how much everyone will ultimately agree with this movement. I wonder how things are with this in Greece?
