Thessaloniki: Couple selling counterfeit olive oil in handcuffs

In the area of Toumba (Thessaloniki), employees of the operational tactics and actions department of the sub-directorate for combating organized crime and human trafficking arrested a couple who were engaged in the sale of olive oil of dubious quality and authenticity.

This is a couple of citizens, 39 and 33 years old (male and female), against whom a case has been initiated for violating the legislation on the “Rules for regulating the purchase of products and provision of services,” as well as other provisions within the competence of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.

In particular, the arrested persons were found selling oil in the morning hours of Wednesday (08/11) in the immediate vicinity of the public market in the Tumba area. At the same time, during a police check, 12 containers of oil were found. In particular, the following were discovered and confiscated:

  • metal and plastic containers of 5 liters each,
  • 1 notebook with handwritten notes,
  • 22 stickers/business cards with their contact information to promote their products.

At the request of the competent service (υπηρεσίας συνεργείο του Ε.Φ.Ε.Τ.), inspectors came and took samples of the confiscated olive oil, which were subsequently sent to the appropriate examination service for further laboratory testing.

Those arrested, against whom a case has been initiated, were delivered to the competent authorities. The accused, by order of the prosecutor, were released until the completion of a laboratory examination of the quality of the oil, so that a decision could then be made to bring them to criminal responsibility.
