Greek F16s and American B-1B bombers train together at the Athens FIR


As part of the general planning by the General Staff of the Hellenic Armed Forces for military cooperation between Greece and the United States, joint training of the Armed Forces and B-1B bombers of the United States European Command (USEUCOM) was completed at the Athens training ground.

From the Greek side, two pairs of US Air Force F-16 and F-4 fighters, performing escort and close air support (CAS) missions, as well as the Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) group of the US General Staff Special Warfare Command, took part in the training. On the American side, B-1B bombers and JTAC elements participated.

During the exercise at the GAFFYRON training ground, JTAC groups conducted simulated target engagements. This event was a continuation of related joint training in previous months and contributed to increasing the level of operational readiness, combat capability and know-how exchange, as well as improving multi-level military synergy between the armed forces of the two countries.

The last joint operational training of the Greek-American Air Force and special forces took place in March last year and was called “SPARTAN SPEAR”. From the United States, a B-52 strategic bomber from the US Air Force operational bomber group participated in the joint exercises, and from the Greek side, two F-16 fighters as part of the escort group and 1 joint group of terminal attack controllers from the Special Warfare Command of the Air Force General Staff Greece. During the exercise, a simulated target engagement was carried out by a B-52 aircraft with a demonstration of the actions of the JTAC group of the 32nd Marine Brigade at the GLAFYRON training ground.
