More than half of Russians want an end to the war (poll)

Sociologists from the independent research Levada Center conducted another monthly survey in October, which showed: 70% of the Russian population want an end to the war.

How tells BB.LV, when asked about the attitude towards the war in Ukraine in 50 regions of Russia, the majority of respondents answered that they would welcome a cessation of hostilities if Russian President Vladimir Putin made such a decision.

The question was: “If President Vladimir Putin decided this week to end the military conflict with Ukraine, would you support or not support this decision?” The answers were distributed as follows:

  • 37% of respondents answered that they would definitely support such a decision by the Kremlin;
  • 33% said they would probably support it;
  • only 12% of respondents said they in no way supported the end of the war and President Putin’s potential decision to withdraw troops.

More than half of the respondents said that in any case they were in favor of peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. At the same time, 57% said that they would not support Putin if he decides to give the occupied territories to Ukraine. Another 34% said they were not against such a decision. The Levada Center survey did not specify whether we are talking only about parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions captured since 2022, or also about Crimea.

The next question was: “If you had the opportunity to go back in time and cancel or support the start of a military operation in Ukraine, would you…” Opinion among those surveyed was almost evenly divided: 41% of Russians said they would cancel the SVO, as they call the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Almost as many, 43%, said they would support an invasion.

More than half, 62% of survey participants, said that the war in Ukraine is going well, while almost half believe that the war will last more than a year. 23% of respondents answered that they do not know why Putin started the war in Ukraine, 25% talk about the need to liberate Donbass from the power of Kiev, 10% justify the invasion by the fact that “we need to return our historical lands,” 14% of respondents talk about the fight against fascism in Ukraine, and 13%, following the president, repeat that Russia was “forced to attack Ukraine, we were offended.”
