The modernization of the system for monitoring and imposing fines on drivers using dedicated bus lanes has now shown itself “in all its glory”, having proven its usefulness in practice.
There is probably no driver who, while moving around the center of Athens, has not noticed dozens of cars driving along the bus lanes, giving in to temptation.
This phenomenon of widespread illegal use of bus lanes, which significantly complicates the movement of public vehicles that can use them legally, has been decided to be limited by the installation of new digital cameras after an appropriate tender. The new cameras replaced the old analog cameras that used film, which were eventually abandoned due to, among other things, high operating costs. The contract amount for the purchase and operation of the cameras reached 454,088 euros.
The new contract covers the supply and installation of a total of 12 new digital cameras and the same number of receivers to monitor bus lanes and record speed violations. The contract also provided for the creation of two workstations to operate the cameras, namely processing photographs, confirming violations and sending notices to violators.
12 new cameras installed OASA in cooperation with the traffic police on roads where specific unauthorized behavior of drivers is sharply observed. In particular, five cameras are installed on Vasilissis Sophias Avenue, three on Mesogeon Avenue, three on Alexandras Avenue and one on Kifisias Avenue.
For drivers who violate the traffic regulations regarding the use of a bus lane, the fine is 200 euros. In fact, in the case of parking in a bus lane, in addition to a fine for movement, the license plates are removed and the vehicle is towed. As noted, income from fines goes to the region’s treasury, and not to the OASA “wallet”
