Israeli ground forces entered the Gaza Strip on Friday evening, October 27. U.S. officials say the extent of the incursion is unclear.
New York Times, citing Israeli army sources, writesthat the Israeli military entered after intensive shelling of the enclave with artillery and rockets fired from military aircraft. The publication notes that this happened three weeks after cross-border Hamas raids, which killed 1,400 people in Israel.
Leading Palestinian mobile networks Jawwal and Paltel stated about interrupted mobile and Internet communications after the strikes. Israeli Maj. Gen. Nir Dinar said Israeli troops had crossed the border and were fighting in the Gaza Strip, but declined to say whether this was the start of a full-scale ground invasion that Israel has been claiming for weeks:
“Our troops and tanks are in the Gaza Strip – they shoot and operate. But our troops and tanks were in Gaza yesterday.”
Hamas declaresthat collided with Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip. Previously, Palestinian reports reported that fighting between IDF soldiers and Hamas terrorists was taking place between the city of Beit Hanoun and the Bureij refugee camp in northern Gaza.
Earlier, IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said that Israeli ground forces would “expand their ground operations” on the evening of October 27 and would intensify air strikes in the Gaza Strip. Hamas terrorists are hiding under the largest hospital in Gaza, reported spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, he released audiovisual footage “proving that Hamas is using humanitarian resources for its terrorist activities.”
