Minister of education: "Permission for private universities is inevitable"

Education, Religion and Sports Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said on Friday that legislation would soon be passed to end the “state monopoly” on university education.

In an interview with state broadcaster ERT, Pirrakakis emphasized that “The public university remains the flagship of university education in Greece, but it needs to be further strengthened and improved to achieve maximum results.”

“We cannot, however, continue to maintain a global exception in the country, a state monopoly on Greek higher education,” – the minister added.

According to him, the ministry intends to submit a bill to parliament before the end of 2023 in order to act quickly and “use the enormous potential that we have not used for so many years for various reasons.”

According to previous media reports, the private universities will offer, among other things, training in medicine and will be created in cooperation with foreign universities, such as those from Cyprus.

There are now many private universities (at the college level) operating in Greece, but the education they provide is on behalf of their head offices abroad, and the list of specialties is quite limited.

PS Perhaps competition with private universities will improve the quality of education in Greece, which, in some relevant disciplines, leaves much to be desired.
