Greece offers full support to Israel as long as ‘humanitarian costs are low’

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed full support for his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu during a brief visit to Jerusalem on Monday. “We hope that whatever happens, it will happen without great humanitarian losses,” the Greek prime minister admonished Bibi.

He expressed his horror and sorrow at the terrorist attacks Hamas on Israel and said: “In any case, you can count on our support, our help.”

Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly responded: “Thank you, my friend. Thank you.”

Mitsotakis confirmed the position of Greece and “Israel’s right to self-defense in accordance with international law”and “the need to protect civilians, free Israelis held hostage by Hamas, and avoid a humanitarian crisis.”

The dialogue between Mitsotakis and Netanyahu at the beginning of the meeting was reported to be as follows:

Benjamin Netanyahu: Prime Minister, my dear friend Kyriakos, I am very glad to see you here. I always say that the best thing, besides being with Israel, is being in Israel. I appreciate your solidarity, that of your government and the Greek people in this dark hour. This is a battle of civilization against barbarism. We are on the side of civilization and must unite against Hamas, which is the Islamic State (ISIS).

Kyriakos Mitsotakis: “Thank you very much, Prime Minister, dear Bibi. I came here not only as an ally, but also as a true friend. What happened was truly terrible. From the very beginning, Greece defended and supported Israel’s right to self-defense in accordance with the norms of international rights. We have made a very clear distinction between Hamas and the Palestinian people. We will continue to support you and hope that whatever happens should happen without great humanitarian losses. You can count on our support, on our help.”.

Benjamin Netanyahu: Thank you my friend. Thank you.

During his visit to Jerusalem, Mitsotakis also met with two families of Israelis being held hostage. He is due back in Athens on Monday afternoon. Mitsotakis had originally planned to visit Israel last Thursday, but the visit was postponed due to “security reasons.”

PS I have no idea what the Greek Prime Minister meant when he said “without large humanitarian costs”, and how his humanitarian counter works. But I understand that in fact Kyriakos Mitsotakis gave the go-ahead for the “cleansing” of the Gaza Strip. How this will turn out for Greece, where the number of Muslims is more than 10% of the population, I do not yet know. But I’m just sure that nothing good will come from this.

According to official data, starting from October 7:

4,651 Palestinians killed, 14,245 wounded. Of the total number of victims, 40% are children…
