Syrian detained in Athens church for shouting "Allahu Akbar"

A young Syrian man was detained in a church in the Athens district of Agios Panteleimonas, where he entered with a knife. A priest called police because he thought a man who entered the church shortly before 8pm on Thursday was acting suspiciously.

A foreigner with Syrian citizenship entered the church in Agios Panteleimonas carrying a large kitchen knife in his backpack.

According to media reports, upon entering the church, the man fell to his knees and began to pray. Officers from the ΟΠΚΕ special police unit found him in the same position and tried to detain him. The suspect began shouting “Allahu Akbar” and resisted arrest. However, the police managed to handcuff him.

In his backpack, police found a 24 cm long kitchen knife, news site newsit.gr reports. The man was taken to the police station, and the prosecutor ordered a transfer to a psychiatric hospital.

According to media reports, the 24-year-old Syrian citizen has been living in Athens recently and is already known to the police in connection with several incidents in the recent past. Last Easter, he walked into the church of Agios Panteleimonas during the liturgy and began to read the Koran. A case was filed against him and he was “administratively deported” [не знаю, что это значит, но, судя по всему, его вывели из церкви] for reasons of public safety.

After another strange incident, he was again referred for a psychiatric evaluation for public safety, but his detention was not deemed necessary. About 20 days ago he reportedly set fire “The Gardener’s House”owned by the municipality, the fire brigade was called to investigate.

As I understand it, instead of deportation, this subject will be in a psychiatric hospital “on full board” from the state, and after a while he will be released onto the street again.
