What to do with hotels that have been invaded "French" bedbugs

Reports of bedbugs in Greece are becoming increasingly frequent at a time when the tiny insects have already taken over Paris and London, fueling fears about their global spread.

A seaside hotel in southeastern Attica has become the victim of a bedbug infestation, according to Hospitality Workers President George Hatzoglu. According to him, this became known from one of the hotel employees who filed a complaint, possibly after one of the clients or employees reported the bite.

Hotel representatives stated that there were no bedbugs in the building, but other sources confirmed the information, and now the hotel will have to carry out sanitation.

The hotel was in panic. Guests were immediately moved to other rooms, the relevant wing was disinfected and a possible insect outbreak is being monitored.

It should be noted that tourists from France often stay at this hotel. “In their clothes, in their luggage there were eggs or insects themselves, which thus ended up in the hotel.”,” noted Mr. Hotzoglu.

In a conversation with LIVE NEWS, hotel managers deny the existence of such an outbreak on its territory. Industry experts advise remaining calm as they say they are taking all hygiene measures. “Hotel owners change mattresses all the time, and there is no reason to worry.”said Hojoglu.

This is not a public health issue

What are the signs of a bedbug infestation?

According to the British Pest Management Association, bed bugs thrive during the warmer months of the year when they are most active. However, temperature-controlled buildings also provide habitat where insects can live year-round.

They are most common in densely populated areas with a rapid turnover of residents, such as apartment buildings, dormitories and recreation centers. In recent years, outbreaks have been reported in hospitals, hotels, libraries, prisons and offices from London to New York.

Where do they come from?
A bedbug infestation is not a reflection of poor hygiene, experts say. Outbreaks are usually initiated by a person who comes into contact with the insects through travel or contact with contaminated objects. According to Diagnostics, an international journal of medical diagnostics, the number of bedbugs in the human environment has “increased dramatically” over the past three decades.

How to get rid of them?
Bedbug control is a “complex” process that can take weeks to months, the Environmental Protection Agency said.
