Hospital employee arrested for reporting patient’s imminent death to funeral home

Police arrest a staff member at a government hospital on the island Lesbos and the owner of a funeral home, to whom he “leaked” information about patients in a dying state for a bribe.

The arrests were made Tuesday based on a complaint filed at the local police station. Two suspects one of whom works at the Island General Hospital, and the other is the owner of a funeral home charged with bribery, bribery of a public servant, breach of confidentiality, dereliction of duty and incitement to violate official secrets. The case file also includes the name of another hospital employee.

Both suspects were brought to the prosecutor, who began a preliminary investigation. According to police, hospital employees have had access to the electronic files of hospital doctors since at least the end of August this year. They systematically leaked sensitive medical and personal information to the funeral home owner, who in turn assumed responsibility for providing the funeral services, thereby reaping financial benefits.

To date, 74 cases of violation of official secrets have been identified, 54 of which concern deceased patients, and in 26 cases the funerals were carried out by this funeral home.

Police raided the suspects’ homes and businesses and found and confiscated 18,240 euros, mobile phones, documents and handwritten notes, local media reported. lesvosnews.net.
