Tourism: which regions became the winners of this season


The number of tourists in Greece increased between January and August 2023, with international arrivals at major airports increasing compared to 2022 and tourism sector revenues recording record numbers, according to data published by INSETE, the research tool of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises.

It goes without saying that Greece will win in terms of revenue in the 2023 season, the Greek tourism authorities emphasized, as it is considered certain that 2019’s record revenue of 18.2 billion euros will be broken.

Summarizing the data, INSETE emphasizes that during the period January-August 2023, 17.4 million international air arrivals, which corresponds to an increase of 12.4%, that is, 1.9 million arrivals more than last year. At the same time, 7.7 million international vehicle arrivals were recorded, up from 5.7 million between January and August 2022, representing an increase of 35.8% or an additional 2.0 million car arrivals.

Also interesting is the data provided by the country’s airports. Eleftherios Venizelos is the leader with 4.8 million international air arrivals, showing a growth of 32.4% for the period January-August 2023. It is followed by Thessaloniki Airport with 1.6 million international air arrivals (an increase of 21.4%).

In Crete, Heraklion Airport recorded an increase of 4.9%, while international air arrivals reached 2.6 million, and Chania Airport saw arrivals reach 1.1 million (an increase of 7.1%).

Rhodes Airport recorded 1.9 million international flights, up 1.5%, and Kos Airport recorded 1.0 million international flights, up 6.0%.

Mykonos Airport recorded 441,000 international arrivals, down 5.4%, while Santorini Airport recorded 574,000 international arrivals, down 7.9%.

Corfu Airport saw 1.4 million international arrivals, an increase of 7.5%, while Zakynthos Airport saw 774,000 international arrivals, an increase of 9.1%. Akti Airport recorded 306 thousand international air arrivals, an increase of 6.1%, while Kefalonia Airport saw an increase of 3.4%, recording 293 thousand international air arrivals.

Skiathos Airport recorded an increase of 12.6%, with the number of air arrivals reaching 209 thousand. A similar picture was recorded at the airports of Samos and Kavala with an increase of 7.4% and 19.1% respectively, with 105 thousand and 98 thousand international air arrivals.

At Kalamata airport decline amounted to 19.2%, while 95 thousand international air arrivals were recorded. In contrast, at Araxos Airport the number of international air arrivals reached 51 thousand, showing an increase of 40.2%. Finally, at Mytilene Airport the number of international air arrivals reached 44 thousand, showing an increase of 20.8%.

Regarding arrivals by road, an increase was recorded at all border stations between January and August 2023 compared to 2022. In particular, the Promakhona border station recorded the largest increase of 85.4%, with the number of arrivals by road reaching 2.1 million, followed by the Kipi border station, which recorded an increase of 63.2%, with the number of arrivals by roads amounted to 643 thousand people.

In the period January-July 2023, travel revenues in Greece showed an increase of 20.2% compared to the corresponding period in 2022 and amounted to 10.321 million euros. This development is due to an increase in revenues from residents of EU-27 countries by 14.7%, which amounted to 5.649 million euros, as well as revenues from residents of non-EU-27 countries by 27.0%, which amounted to 4.403 million euros.

The destinations preferred by foreign tourists remained the same. These are Athens and Thessaloniki, Mykonos, Santorini, Messinia, Rhodes, Kerkyra and others, included in the top 10 of world tourism.
