State Minister Makis Voridis has voiced his objections to same-sex marriage, saying he would not vote if the issue were brought before parliament.
“I have formulated my personal point of view. I oppose it, and I have clearly stated that I will not support it. And then everything depends on the prime minister,” Voridis said in an interview with Action24 TV on Thursday evening.
The arch-conservative minister noted that, given the government’s lack of any concrete initiatives in this direction, “the current debate remains largely academic and theoretical.”
In July, conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced his intention to legalize same-sex marriage during his second term in office, arguing: “Same-sex marriage will happen someday and it is part of our strategy.” He further emphasized that “Greek society is much more ready and mature.” According to the latest data, the new law will also expand the rights of same-sex couples to adoption, Kathimerini notes.
I wonder if this is a game designed for the conservative part of the electorate, or an independent decision by Voridis? Indeed, in modern EU for such statements you can lose not only your post, but also your freedom.
