Olives will be equipped with… microchips

The number of olive oil thefts is increasing every day, as the product has turned into real “liquid gold”.

The safety and integrity of olive groves, increased police presence and regular patrolling of green spaces, and even… the installation of microchips in olive fruits or in bags, as is done in Spain, is proposed to be done in Greece due to the fact that This year’s crop failure and rising product prices have led to a significant increase in theft cases.

According to market experts, the price of olive oil could reach 15 euros per liter, Vangelis Protogerakis, president of the Heraklion Olive Producers Association, told ANT1. Mr Protogerakis stressed that there had already been a request for increased police presence in areas where olive trees grow to prevent thefts. The damage from the theft of olive oil, reported by the Olive Agricultural Cooperative in Polygyros in Chalkidiki, is estimated at more than 370,000 euros.

GPS-enabled olives are an idea that originated in 2018 among farmers in Granada (Spain) to prevent theft in olive groves. The transmitter is round in shape, green or black in color, and looks like an olive. In fact, this is a “spy” who betrays the robbers. And it has a hidden radio frequency device inside.
