Those who “seize” space on the road with the help of any devices (concrete blocks, pallets, chairs, etc.), thinking that they have found a solution to the parking problem, risk “putting their hand deeper in their pocket.”
Undoubtedly, finding a parking space on the streets of Athens is a real Calvary for drivers. In many cases, car owners have to “cut circles” near their destination in order to find a “loophole” and somehow manage to park. Some drivers, having lost patience, leave the car in a place where parking is prohibited, and there are those who think they have found a solution by occupying the part of the road that suits them, through sometimes very strange objects such as flower pots, concrete blocks, boxes, chairs, etc.
Carandmotor.gr witnessed one of countless similar incidents in the early morning of Wednesday, October 4, in the center of Athens. What is, of course, surprising in this case is that the seizure of a section of the street took place just a few meters from a well-known parking lot where there are hundreds of parking spaces.

So, a citizen who independently “seized” a parking space by placing a pallet on the road probably thought that he was smarter than other drivers who decided to use paid parking.
We remind this citizen, as well as others adherents of this practicethat, according to paragraph 1 of Article 48 (“Occupation of a section of road and pedestrian path”) of the Traffic Regulations, “permanent occupation of a section of the roadway with prohibited structures or obstacles, especially if they create inconvenience to the movement of traffic or arrival at a stop or parking of vehicles, as well as restrict the movement of pedestrians, commit offense. The violator is punished with an administrative fine of 400 euros.
Finally, it is worth noting that the occupation of the road surface temporary structures or obstacles may be permitted V exceptional cases or in areas with limited traffic – in residential areas, if there is enough space (and, of course, after obtaining permission from the municipal authorities or the police).
