How to avoid tolls on toll roads

Cases of refusal to pay tolls have become more frequent, with drivers (they are called “deniers”) jumping through the barrier, using an old but quite effective trick.

Traffic offenses do not stop; a significant part of drivers stubbornly refuse to pay the toll that is growing every year, declaring that they are supporters of the “I don’t cry” social movement*.

According to readers of the website carandmotor.gr, who witnessed such incidents, this phenomenon not only has not decreased, but has even intensified, and the “refuseniks” believe that this practice remains unpunished.

The way denier drivers operate is extremely simple: they hug the back of the car in front and wait patiently for the driver in front and the toll booth worker to complete the payment of the fare.

When the barrier opens and the car in front passes, toll deniers sharply press the gas, not waiting for the barrier to close. “Refuseniks” take advantage of the (sufficient for them) time between the opening and closing of the barrier, thereby avoiding payment.

The situation is even simpler with motorcyclists who wait on the right side of the motorway and, as soon as the barrier opens, rush into the distance. Motorcyclists’ “weapon” in their entire operation is the flip-up signposts, which are easy to “hide” and in some cases license plates are placed under the rear fender so they are not easily visible.

However, this practice is not only illegal, but also extremely dangerous, as evidenced by a number of incidents in which some drivers either collided with the barrier or crashed into the rear of cars in front.

This phenomenon did not go unnoticed by the competent authorities, who installed video cameras at stations to record and confirm violations. As stated in paragraphs. 10 tbsp. 29 (Traffic of vehicles on motorways, expressways and tunnels) of the Traffic Code, violators are subject to a fine of 200 euros.

* Participants in the “I don’t pay” movement refer to the fact that every car owner who pays road tax annually automatically pays for travel on toll roads. And since, with the exception of Attika Odos, all highways in Greece are public and are illegally “leased” to private individuals, they do not have to pay this illegal toll. It is worth noting that since the emergence of the movement in 2015, the authorities have not been able to give an adequate answer as to why it is necessary to pay…
