Pilot sentenced to life imprisonment: who he was and why he killed his wife

The prosecutor of Babis Anagnostopoulos, the killer pilot, returned the verdict: “The motive for the brutal crime was revenge. He killed his wife Caroline because she rebelled and went against his will.”

“The defendant had direct malicious intent. There are no other motives. We have considered all versions. He wanted to kill Caroline and did it,” said the prosecutor of the joint jury of appeal, which, in the absence of the defendant Babis Anagnostopoulos, who refused to appeal, is considering the crime that occurred in the town of Glika Nera.

A prosecutor found the pilot guilty of killing his 20-year-old wife and their dog in May 2021.

He was initially sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 11.5 years in prison, according to the indictment. The accused himself was absent from the trial because he abandoned his appeal in June last year, and his appointed defense attorneys also resigned. The court has started appointing lawyers ex officio (forcibly), with which the accused did not agree. However, by decision of the authorities the trial continued with the participation of lawyers who were assigned to appear in defense of Babis Anagnostopoulos.

In his speech, the prosecutor emphasized that the court must examine elements of the accused’s personality and the characteristics of the crime he claims to be related to revenge.

“He did not hesitate to place the child next to the mother’s corpse! And without hesitation he took his daughter to the funeral. Also, without hesitation, Babis Anagnostopoulos asked his mother for 2000 euros for the coffin! If that’s not the definition of selfishness, manipulative behavior and narcissism, then what is? He “punished” Caroline for daring to go against God’s will. What God? Didn’t he imagine himself to be the Almighty?!” – said a representative of the prosecutor’s office, asking representatives of the accused side “not to take into account the pilot’s statements about his mental instability.”

Referring to the fact that the accused staged the crime to make it look like a robbery after a murderthe prosecutor said: “He thought he had the ability and wit to fool us all.”

Trying to shed light on the peculiarities of the couple’s relationship, the prosecutor spoke of a “codependent relationship” where the defendant took the initiative: “Caroline was a girl full of life who was “blinded, besotted” by the defendant. He brought her pizza by helicopter to school, he was handsome, the girl was then 15-16 years old. And she… “melted.” That’s when codependent relationships emerged. Caroline got to the point where got married just three days after reaching adulthood. Were these decisions Caroline’s initiative? The pilot claims that this is so.”

Psychiatrist Alkistis Igoumenaki, in her testimony about the defendant’s personality, referred to the “narcissistic disorder and manipulative behavior” of Babis Anagnostopoulos.
