Greek customs "wraps" cars with Russian license plates

Greek customs stops cars with Russian registration numbers at the country’s border, prohibiting entry into the country.

Turkish border guards at the Ipsala-Kipi checkpoint allowed Russian citizens through, and Greek border guards have already stamped their passports with entry stamps. But then the Greek border guards asked for insurance for the car.

Russian travelers did not have the necessary documents, and they decided to buy insurance on the spot. The insurers contacted customs representatives, who suggested that the Russians return back to Turkey, citing sanctions directive of the European Commission.

Travelers were explained that they could not enter the country in a car with Russian license plates and were strongly asked to leave Greece. However, the Muscovite noted that not all cars with Russian license plates experience difficulties upon entry:

“We went to talk to the customs officers, where they gave us a printout of clarifications from the European Commission and said that we could enter, but not in a car with Russian license plates. And they persistently asked us to leave Greece. We turned around. At the exit, my husband was given a passport, the entry stamp was crossed out with a pen “, canceling the fact of entry. My stamp was not canceled.”

We would like to remind you that after clarifications from the European Commission, published in early September, entry by cars with Russian license plates was officially restricted by the authorities of Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Finland. However, Greece, the publication writes, became the first country to begin to apply this restriction without official announcements. Norway has also announced plans to introduce restrictions on the import and use of Russian cars, although specific measures have not yet been determined.
