Heating this winter: which solution is the most economical?

For households with financial problems, a particularly difficult winter is predicted.

The burden on family budgets due to rising prices for food and other consumer goods continues. Added to this are heating costs. Therefore, in anticipation In winter, the main question for households is how to save on heating, and what is economically profitable – fuel oil or natural gas.

Based on today’s price data and before the distribution of heating oil began (October 15), the average price for it (if it was sold now) would be 1.50 euros per liter. The corresponding prices for natural gas currently range from 0.0066 euros to 0.080 euros per kilowatt-hour.

If you compare prices, it becomes obvious that households that choose natural gas for heating will benefit between 43% and 53%. The above prices for specific fuels include VAT and various charges included in invoices.

Of course, to To benefit from the use of natural gas, it is necessary to have access to the distribution network. In other words, the citizen will have to find out whether a low-pressure pipeline runs in front of the house (which will allow a connection to be made). To do this, he will have to either seek help from the energy supply company or from the gas distribution company EDA, which has divisions in different areas: EDA Attica, EDA THESS (Thessaly and Thessaloniki) and DEDA (rest of Greece).

It is worth noting that these companies usually have discount programs on network connection fees, and under certain conditions they also implement subsidy programs ΕΣΠΑ for connection and installation of an autonomous or central heating system with natural gas.

Let us remind you that natural gas has become the most competitive solution in last winter period October 2022-April 2023. More precisely, for this period and according to data processed by Natural Gas of Greece, a household living in a house with an area of 120 sq.m. saved 160 euros when heating with natural gas compared to heating with fuel oil. In other words, in total During the winter months, natural gas was 14% cheaper than fuel oil.

On the other hand, if a family living in an apartment for last decade, installed autonomous heating with natural gas, its total benefit would be 3,500 euros or 35.7% compared to heating with fuel oil. In the winter of the above-mentioned period, owners and tenants of an apartment building will save 18,000 euros.
