Transport strike: confusion and confusion

What has happened in the last few hours in connection with the transport strike announced for September 21 can be described in two words: confusion and confusion.

The problem is that stopping the operation of buses and trolleybuses is recognized by the authorities as illegal after the court partially upheld management’s appeal. And metro workers said that they are being tried for a strike they did not call.

Strike by the Greek air traffic controllers union (EEKKE), which announced its participation in the 24-hour ADEDY strike against the Ministry of Labor bill, was also declared illegal. The strike was challenged in the Athens Court of First Instance by the Civil Aviation Service and the Ministry of Transport.

Regarding the metro, the situation is even more confusing. The lawsuit filed by the management of the company ΣΤΑΣΥ was rejected by the court. The company just announced the following: “We inform you that tomorrow, Thursday 21/09, metro lines 2 and 3 will operate from the beginning of service until 13:30. Additional information will be provided on line 1 of the Piraeus – Kifissia metro station.”

Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, subway workers said they were being sued for a strike they did not call. In their statement they noted: “Tomorrow’s strike on 09/21/23 has been called by ADEDY, EKA and other federations throughout the country. No body of our union has taken the decision to call a strike.”

“The following lies were recorded in the statement of claim. With the help of this press release, our company ΣΤΑΣΥ became aware of the decision of the defendant unions to hold a 24-hour strike on Thursday 09/21/2023”they added.

“The lie is that our union supposedly sent a corresponding press release to the ΣΤΑΣΥ company. We assure you that our union did not send any such press release. These are new morals that the employer company ΣΤΑΣΥ began to implement. We publicly and we condemn it with anger”– emphasized the leadership of the trade union.

Following the complaint, ΣΕΛΜΑ issued a new statement informing its members that they were covered by ΕΚΑ, a secondary trade union organization, for the strike. “Therefore, the massive participation of all of us is necessary,” the ΣΕΛΜΑ emphasized, “to demonstrate the disagreement of the working people with everything that is being done to the detriment of us.”
