The Athens-Thessaloniki highway is open to passenger cars and vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons


On Friday 15 September, at 17:15, the flooded section of the Athens-Thessaloniki highway reopened to traffic for both private cars and vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons. The flooded section of the highway has been closed to traffic since Saturday 9 September 2023.

Traffic will be in the left lane in both directions on the section between the Sykouri motorway and the Gyrtoni motorway, said motorway operator Aegean Motorway. – A section of the Athens-Thessaloniki motorway that was closed due to the flooding of the Pinios River has been opened to traffic in both directions in agreement with the competent authorities and the Greek police. Regarding heavy vehicles, this will be announced later, depending on the development of the flooding phenomenon and the possibility of completing inspections on the section of road that remains flooded in the disputed area.”

In a conversation with the state news agency amna Fire Department spokesman Yiannis Arthopoios said that vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons are not allowed until the road surface is fully restored, but civil defense vehicles, government vehicles of any category serving affected areas, as well as vehicles weighing more than 3 .5 tons, used for collecting and transporting animal carcasses. At the same time, he emphasized that in the triangle of Larisa, Karditsa, Trikala, all main roads are open.
