E. Lekkas: “The Thessalian plain will recover in five years – damage to farmers will exceed 1 billion euros”

Professor Efthimios Lekkas refers to the consequences of the cyclone Danielwhich hit Greece after the flood of the Pinios River in Larissa.

The professor of geology and disaster management warned that “we must be prepared if an emergency occurs,” but this has not happened as we already mourn ten dead.

In an interview, he said farmland is an area that will take a long time to recover.

22-23% of the country’s agricultural production was completely destroyed, since clay and silt on fertile soils at least half a meter thick do not allow the cultivation of crops.

According to his estimates, it will take at least 5 years to restore the fertility of the Thessaly plain.

As for the costs and consequences for agricultural production, Efthymis Lekkas estimates that they will exceed 1 billion euros.

According to him, “no public service could have foreseen what happened, it requires the use of complex scientific knowledge that is not currently used”.

He noted that if in 2019 one major flood was predicted once every 1,000 years, then within four years they occurred twice.
