The African Union will join the G20

The G20 has decided to include the African Union as a permanent member.

Bloomberg reports, citing sources, that G20 leaders will announce this on September 9-10 in Delhi, during the summit. The message says:

“This move will give the 55-member African Union, which is currently an invited international organization, the same status as EU“.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made the inclusion of the AU into the G20 a priority. The European Union is also trying to improve relations and strengthen ties with Africa. For Brussels, this is especially important, given Russia’s active promotion of its interests among African states and its use of propaganda to incite hatred towards Western countries.

The G20 decision will be part of a process in which developed countries are trying to attract developing countries, in particular countries of the so-called Global South, including African ones, to take a more active role in setting the international agenda. notes Bloomberg.

Reference. The African Union (AU) is an international intergovernmental organization that unites 55 African states. Founded in 2002. It aims to strengthen the unity and solidarity of African states, protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity, accelerate political and socio-economic integration, uphold common positions on issues of interest to the continent and its peoples. The Assembly of the AU, at which the most important decisions are made, is held every six months.
