More than 500 people commit suicide every year in Greece


Every year in our country, according to official data, more than 500 people commit suicide, leaving behind at least 5,000 mourners.

As experts note, in reality there are much more suicides than are registered, and about there is no data at all on non-lethal attemptsthe number of which is estimated to be 15–20 times more than registered suicides.

Figures provided by the service “Παρατηρητήριο Αυτοκτονιών” and the day center for suicide prevention “KLIMAKA”, an organization that is a member of the International Union for Suicide Prevention.

Experts say: 95% of suicides could be prevented.

Suicide data

  • In 2022, the 24-hour suicide hotline 1018 received 20,857 calls.
  • In 2020, 464 people committed suicide.
  • For every suicide, there are at least 22 emergency department visits and 5 hospitalizations.
  • At least 25% of suicides are not recorded at all.
  • There are 15-20 times more non-fatal attempts than registered suicides.
  • The number of suicides in 2021-2022 and 2023 shows steady upward trend. According to the service “Παρατηρητήριο Αυτοκτονιών”, more than 1,500 people committed suicide during this period.
  • 91 people have committed suicide in the last decade in hospitals and health care facilities.
  • Since 2015, there have been 67 suicides in prisons and pre-trial detention centers.
  • Since 2015, 76 law enforcement officers and 49 military or conscripts have committed suicide.
  • During the same period, 52 suicides occurred in public transport (in the subway, city train).

The main message of World Suicide Prevention Day is that suicide is preventable.

In the context of the date being celebrated, the KLIMAKA suicide prevention center will carry out information and public awareness activities in Attica and Patras, as well as on the islands of Corfu, Naxos, Amorgos, Santorini, Kastellorizo ​​and Symi.

In Athens, today at 13:00 (Eumolpidon 30-32, Kerameikos) and on Sunday 10 September, from 19:00 to 21:00, in Kotzia Square there will be a public information event with the participation of the string quartet L’Anima.

The suicide prevention day center operates a 24-hour helpline for citizens, telephone number 1018.

The organization is the only branch of its kind in the country, which has been engaged in research and educational activities in the field of suicide and self-destructive behavior for more than 16 years. KLIMAKA operates under the control and financial support of the Ministry of Health, while being the national representative body of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP).
