Palama: "There may be many victims" (video)

The situation in Palama Karditsa remains critical. People trapped by the elements say: “We probably have too many victims – they drowned, voices were heard.” Kyriakos Mitsotakis arrived in Karditsa today.

The water level in Palama reached two meters in places as of yesterday evening. A village of 7,000 people is flooded. A resident of the area, Ms. Eleni, is calling on the authorities for help to save her and her family. They are alive because the house, fortunately, is two-story. Many one-story buildings are flooded with water up to the roof, writes newsbeast.gr. An excited woman says:

“We are in our house, it is two-story. The lower floor is completely flooded. We took two elderly people with us. The water reached 2 meters. We have no help from anyone, no water, no food. We must have too many victims. Too many houses have collapsed.”

She says that she saw the collapse of houses with her own eyes:

“We have three houses that have collapsed and one is now ready to fall. We don’t know if there are people inside. The neighbor who was across the street was brought to our home by firefighters. He is in good health. But we don’t have water, we need help. There is not a single boat and no help. The mansions are flooded, there is 2 meters of water in them.”

Palamas resident Karditsa Harula Petropoulou spoke last night (September 7) about an elderly man whose house collapsed while he was sleeping inside and about more than 20 brick houses that collapsed in the area:

“The rain stopped at 15:30. At 16:00 the Stavros dam burst and water began to flow. Since last night we have been calling on the mayor to break the barrier to the other side. Something that didn’t happen. Until 04:30 – 05:00 there was quite a lot of flooding, and they were drowning, and voices were heard. There are people, I don’t know if they survived, if they are okay. A man was sleeping in this house, broken in half. This is where the dogs came out at approximately 7:00 am when the house collapsed. I don’t think this man is alive, and he is not the only one, because we are talking about more than 20 brick houses that collapsed in Palama.”

Six are missing in Agia Triada, dozens are trapped. Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias said at a press conference he gave along with the heads of the National Fire Service of Greece, the fire brigade and the Greek police: “The entire state apparatus is focused on Thessaly.”

He claims that 195 units of equipment and 480 EMAK and fire personnel are working. A very difficult place is located between Trikala and Karditsa. As is currently known, in Agia Triada 20 people are trapped and 6 are missing, in Megala Kalyvia 40 people are in houses and in Kalogriana 4 people are also in houses. Leteos is flooded. Proastio, Agia Triada, Palama, Megala Kalyvia are excluded. Huge explanatory work is being undertaken. The minister says:

“In Palamas and its suburbs, that is, Kefalochoria, we have no specific information about missing and stranded people. I want to assure you that there are no funds, no energy, no efforts that have not been used.”

Vassilis Kikilias reported that 885 people had been released and concluded: “To everyone who is being tested: take courage and strength to know that we are here for them.”

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis arrived in Karditsa shortly after 10 am on Friday 08 September by helicopter, he will conduct research into the effects of the cyclone in the affected areas of Thessaly. Mr. Mitsotakis went to the city stadium, where residents of villages in the prefecture, liberated from flooded houses, are gathering. There he talked with freed people who were being transported by helicopter at that time, with fire department and army rescuers, pilots, doctors and nurses.
