“Currently we are checking all codes included in “toa schoolboy’s basket“. Anyone who tries to cheat or tries to earn at least a penny more than he earned in the pre-inflationary period will pay dearly” – aboutThis was stated by the Minister of Development, Mr. Kostas Skrekas, in an interview with the ΣΚΑΙ TV channel.
According to the minister: “InYesterday we imposed €940,000 fines on 5 chains for misleading discounts, and a further €1.4 million a few weeks ago. We are currently reviewing all codes included in the “student basket” for school supplies. During 2023, we carried out more than 9,000 inspections, identified 1,300 violations and imposed fines of more than 5,000,000 euros”.
Mr Skrekas acknowledged that “accuracy is a burden on households and Greek consumers”and called one of the key priorities of the government “protecting the Greek family from dishonest trading practices and those who try to speculate at a critical moment”.
“We are working,” he said, “in three directions: tight control over the market, increased competition through the “home basket” and “student basket” and, thirdly, increasing the disposable income of the population through wage increases, tax cuts and such measures, as a market pass, with which we cover almost 100% of food price increases in 1 million households. We continue to fight poverty.”
