Cyclone Daniel: “This may be the heaviest downpour the country has ever seen” (video)

The assessment that Cyclone Daniel brought with it the heaviest downpour ever recorded in Greece was made by meteorologists at a meeting with the prime minister in the civil defense service.

This is the most extreme event that has occurred in the region (Magnesia, etc.) in terms of rainfall in 24 hours – usually such events occur in October or November, but this shower surpassed all previously known.

During the meeting, the participating ministers, the governor of the Thessaly region K. Agorastos, meteorologists and representatives of the fire service discussed the issues of coordinating actions in the coming difficult hours, as this phenomenon passes (providing open roads to hospitals and critical infrastructure facilities, placing people where it is necessary, etc.).

754 mm of precipitation in Pelion

754 mm of precipitation per day was registered by the meteorological station of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr in Zagora Pelion until 18:06. Rainfall continues.

The highest daily rainfall until 20:45 is recorded in Zagora Pelion and is 754 mm. The previous daily rainfall record of 644.7 mm was recorded at Paliki in Kefalonia during the Mediterranean cyclone Janus in September 2020.

The highest precipitation heights in millimeters until 20:45, recorded today by the network of meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr, were also recorded in Portaria (613 mm), Volos (393 mm), Agia Larissa (213 mm), Pezula Karditsa (174 mm), Halki Larisa (165 mm), Xanemos Skiathos (159 mm) and Gonna Tempi (143 mm).

However, it is specified that the weather stations in Zagora, Portaria and Volos stopped transmitting data around 18:00, and in Xanemos Skiathos at 10:30 am due to a power outage. Rain continued in most areas.

Numerous power outages

All forces (firefighters, police, etc.) have been working since the morning to eliminate the consequences of the downpour, to provide assistance. A huge amount of work fell on the emergency crews of the power supply service DEDDIEbecause, according to SKAI, hundreds of power outages have been recorded.

Authorities are urging the public to follow civil protection instructions and to respond carefully to messages from the 112 emergency information service.

The meeting with the Prime Minister was attended by V.Kikilias, G.Ikonou, G.Bratakos, Chr. Trianthopoulos, Ev. Tournas, G. Kontogeorgis, Secretary General of Civil Protection Mr. Papageorgiou, Fire Chief and staff, as well as Mr. Agorastos and meteorologists participated in the videoconference.
