Annual rainfall in Greece in one day

The volume of rainwater that fell on Pelion was the largest ever to fall in a single day in Greece. Hurricane Daniel swept across Greece is stunning.

In Zagora Pelion from midnight Monday to Tuesday until 20.45 754 millimeters of rain i.e. 754 tons of water per acre! This is an absolute record for daily precipitation, with most of the volume falling over a period of several hours. It is worth noting that the rain began on Monday 4 September.

So far, the “record” of daily precipitation, according to the National Observatory of Athens, has been set in Makrinitsa, also in Pelion – 417 millimeters since December 10, 2009. This rainfall has been greatly exceeded.

Other rain levels recorded yesterday (all data refer to daylight hours) are also impressive, with 613mm of rainfall for example in Portaria and 393mm in Volos.

For comparison: in Athens an average of about 400 millimeters of precipitation falls during the year.

Rainfall in:

  • Agia, Larissa (213 mm),
  • Pezule (174 mm),
  • Halki, Larissa (165 mm),
  • Skiathos (159 mm),
  • Gonnos-Tempone (143mm),
  • Kardice (109 mm),
  • Muzaki, Karditsa (104 mm).

“What is happening in Magnesia is extremely an extreme event, both in terms of the volume and intensity of precipitation, and in terms of their duration”, comments Kostas Lagouvardos, Director of Research at the Athens Observatory and Scientific Director of the Meteorological Service.

“Probably the fact that the water in the sea has become warmer contributes to the intensity of the phenomenon. Research will be required, ”the expert says. “It is a system that constantly receives humid air from the Aegean Sea, as a result of which it rains continuously in the same place. The rainfall duration element leads to intense flooding because the soil is not able to absorb such a volume of water,” he adds.

It is worth noting that appalling levels of bad weather have been predicted by the competent scientific authorities: The site meteo.gr has recorded areas where there will be a lot of precipitation, especially over 500 millimeters on Tuesday and in the following days, starting from Monday noon.
