Weather today: rain, thunderstorms, hail

On Monday, September 9, the weather is expected to worsen throughout Greece. Bad weather comes with heavy rains and storms.

National Weather Service EMY warns of this in emergency bulletin, and Civil Protection has issued instructions for protection against extreme weather events. The EMY forecast says:

From Monday 09/04/2023 to Wednesday 09/06/2023, the weather in our country will worsen, with heavy rains and storms, accompanied by hail and high lightning frequency, increased winds and a noticeable drop in temperature. According to forecasts, the barometric minimum from the northern Balkans with cold air masses will move south (to the southern part of the Ionian Sea) and affect most regions of our country. The greatest amount of precipitation will fall in Thessaly, Sporades, central and eastern Sterea, northern Evia and the Peloponnese.

In the first half of the day, the weather is forecast to worsen in western and central Macedonia, temporarily in eastern Macedonia and Thrace. From noon, bad weather is expected in Epirus, Thessaly, Sporades and gradually in the Ionian Islands, Sterea and Evia, and from noon in the Peloponnese, mainly in the west and north.

By evening, storm events will be limited to central Macedonia, mainly Pieria and Imathia. In other regions, cloudiness will gradually thicken, and in the evening there will be local rains in the southeast. Thunderstorms are possible late in the evening.

North wind, from 4 to 6 points, at sea locally up to 7 points on the Beaufort scale. In the northern part of the Aegean Sea in the evening it will intensify to 8 Beaufort, and in the southern part of the Ionian Sea, in the late afternoon, the wind will change direction to the east / southeast, its strength will be from 4 to 6 Beaufort.

Temperatures will drop significantly in the north and west. In central Macedonia, the temperature will only rise to 24°C, while in eastern Macedonia and Thrace it will reach 26-28°C. In the rest of the country, the temperature is expected to be 28-30°C, in the south of the islands in places 31°C.

ATTICA

Slightly cloudy this morning, local rains and sporadic storms since noon, mainly in the west and north. The wind is northerly, from 4 to 5 points, and easterly up to 6 points on the Beaufort scale. Temperature 20-30°C.

THESSALONIKI

Cloudy with rain and sporadic thunderstorms, strong in places, from noon. In the evening, a temporary weakening of the manifestations of bad weather. Wind north, 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale. Temperature 19-24°C.
