ELSTAT: A sharp increase in the number of building permits in May

The volume of construction activity in May decreased by 1.6%, which indicates the absence of new construction in general. The number of permits issued, on the other hand, increased by 16.2%, and occupancy by 5.5%, which appears to be mainly due to ads and use of the Exoeconomics program.

Recall that in April 2023, a decrease in the volume of private construction activity by 4.9% was recorded. In particular, according to ELSTAT, the size of the total construction activity (private – public) in May 2023 in the country as a whole, based on the issued building permits, amounted to 2570 permits, which corresponds to 494,482 m2 of area and 2,171,565 m3 of volume, i.e. an increase of 15.8% in the number of building permits, an increase of 7.5% in area and a decrease of 1.6% in volume compared to the corresponding month of 2022.

The number of issued permits for private construction in the whole country in May 2023 amounted to 2,554 building permits, which corresponds to 490,694 m2 of area and 2,144,991 m3 of volume, which indicates an increase in the number of building permits by 16.2%, area by 15.0% and volume by 5.5% compared to the corresponding month of 2022.

In May 2023, 16 permits for public construction activities were issued nationwide, which corresponds to 3,788 m2 of area and 26,574 m3 of volume. The share of public construction activities in the total construction volume for May 2023 is 1.2%.

What happened in the last twelve months
Over the past twelve months, i.e. From June 2022 to May 2023, the volume of total construction activity (public-private) based on issued building permits in the whole country amounted to 26,260 building permits, which corresponds to 5,886,402 m2 of area and 26,383,975 m3 of volume .

Compared to the corresponding period from June 2021 to May 2022, the number of building permits increased by 9.2%, the area – by 0.4%, and the volume – by 2.4%.

During the same period, from June 2022 to May 2023, private construction activity increased by 8.8% in building permits issued, decreased by 0.3% in area, and increased by 1.7% in volume compared to the corresponding between June 2021 and May 2022.

The share of public construction activities in the total volume of construction for the specified period is 2.3%.

For the five months of January – May 2023, the overall construction activity in the country as a whole increased by 11.5% in terms of the number of building permits, by 16.0% in area and by 13.3% in volume compared to the corresponding five months of 2022 . During the same period from January to May 2023, the activity of private construction in the whole country will increase by 11.5% in the number of building permits, by 16.3% in area and by 13.7% in volume compared to the period from January to May 2022.
