Greece is the third most expensive country in the EU for alcoholic beverages

Prices for alcoholic beverages (whiskey, beer and wine) are at particularly high levels in Greece in 2022, making it the third most expensive country EU.

According to Eurostat, based on information provided by the Hellenic Association of Spirits Producers (ΣΕΑΟΠ), Greece is in 3rd place among the 27 EU member states (Finland is the most expensive and Hungary is the cheapest). Our country also ranks 6th among 36 countries (including EFTA/European Free Trade Area countries, Western Balkans and Turkey).

In particular, Greece is the third most expensive country in the EU-27 in terms of the price of alcoholic beverages (with a price level index of 153.3), as well as with prices 53.3% higher than the European average (due to the high VAT rates applied in our country). ), which significantly increases the cost of the drink for the end consumer. “In the field of alcoholic beverages, 51% of the final price is VAT,” the ΣΕΑΟΠ notes.

It follows from the table that Greece ranks quite high compared to competitive tourism countries such as Cyprus (115), France (100.1), Spain (97.8) and Italy (89.3).

The most expensive alcohol is famous for Finland (with a price level index of 214.2) and Ireland (210.7) with prices respectively 114.2% and 110.7% higher than the European average. They are followed by Sweden (151.8), Denmark (144.6) and Estonia (131.3).

The lowest level of alcohol prices was recorded in Hungary – 81.8 (18% below the EU average), in Austria – 83.8 (-16% of the average) and Germany – 86.9 (-13% of the average).

“In 2022, the price level for alcohol was more than two and a half times higher in the most expensive EU Member State compared to the cheapest. Such a wide range of prices is mainly due to differences in the taxation of these products, ”the ΣΕΑΟΠ notes.
