The municipality of Kalamaria has piloted a traffic safety monitoring and recording system, using artificial intelligence to effectively maintain and manage road networks.
Recording is done on a smartphone. The data collected through video and photography is a detailed record of all types of road damage, as well as other road safety data. They are analyzed by artificial intelligence and the results are presented on an online platform (διαδικτυακή πλατφόρμα προσαρμοσμένη σε χάρτη GIS).
The system represents the pavement condition in color for the entire surveyed network. The color of pavement fragments on the interactive map changes depending on the severity and scale of damage/violations.
“This particular program makes a significant contribution to the prevention of road accidents. We found it very interesting and effective,” said Yannis Dardamanelis, mayor of Kalamaria.
The pilot application covers a total of 160 km of the road network. With particular interest, the “conclusions” that artificial intelligence will make regarding the quality of the road surface in Kalamaria are expected. After that, the authorities will only have to report the results of the measurements taken by the artificial intelligence system so that everyone knows if and where there are dangerous places on the road surface in the municipality that need to be corrected before an accident occurs.
