Among the 18 bodies of illegal migrants found charred by fire in the Dadia forest, there were 2 children. The President of Greece issued a statement about the tragedy.

Alexandroupolis pathologist Pavlos Pavlidis examined the charred human remains at the site of their discovery, near the village of Avantas in the Dadia forest in Evros, and told APE-MPE: “A total of 18 charred bodies were found, all of them were men, and two of them were children. All of them were found in groups of two or three people at a distance of five hundred meters, apparently while trying to escape. As explained by the police officers accompanying me, this area is a crossing point for illegal immigrants on their way from the border inland, through the Rhodopes”.

Pavlidis explained that tomorrow the bodies would be taken to the hospital for an autopsy. Rumors of the discovery of eight more bodies elsewhere have not been confirmed.

The President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, in her statement today, expressed her sorrow over the death of 18 people in the forest of Dadia Evros and regret over the course of the devastating fires in many parts of Greece, the agency reported. ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ.

“It is with pain that we see the fires raging in Evros, Attica, Veotia and Evia, and we watch with pain the superhuman efforts made to extinguish them. Pain and suffering intensify after the terrible news of the charred bodies found in the forest of Dadia, the President of the Republic said in a statement. – Shaken by the tragedy, we mourn their death, the irreplaceable losses of our fellow citizens, the destruction of nature, we mourn our inability to prevent this.

In concluding her statement, Ms. Sakellaropoulou emphasized that “It is everyone’s duty to urgently take effective initiatives so that this grim reality does not become the new normal, but is overcome with determination and courage.”
