Expensive: carts in supermarkets are no longer "hammered to the top" products

Maybe in the rest of Europe, food prices are falling, but not in Greece, where “everything always goes wrong.” The high cost of food is increasingly burdening the family budget.

Consistently high food prices are mainly due to the fact that inflation in Greece was higher in July compared to June, after a nine-month downward trend. Cheese and fruits, products that Greece is rich in as a producing country, now look like luxury items! We pay for eggs like gold, and the prices for pork and beef are much higher than last year.

Eurostat’s final data on the harmonized consumer price index published on 18/08/23, which show no change from the estimates published by the agency at the end of July, confirm this.

Thus, according to Eurostat, the harmonized consumer price index in Greece was formed in July 2023 at the level of 3.5% compared to 2.8% in June, having the sixth lowest inflation among the EU member states. Inflation is lowest in Belgium (1.7%), followed by Luxembourg (2%), Spain (2.1%), Cyprus (2.4%), Denmark (3.2%) and then Greece (3 ,5%). It should be noted that Spain and Cyprus are two countries that have decided to temporarily zero VAT on essential goods, mainly food.

However, in the food category, Greece is among the top ten EU member states with the highest price increases. ranking 9th with so-called food inflation set at 13% in July 2023, compared to 12.4% in the EU and 11.6% in the Eurozone.

In fact, it is worth noting that, after a minor price de-escalation in April 2023, food inflation has only been rising since May, in contrast to what is happening in the EU and the eurozone.

The category that recorded very high price increases was cheese, up 16.9% year on year. This is largely due to the fact that many cheeses in Greece – and not just feta – are made from goat milk, the price of which has not decreased, in contrast to what happens with cow’s milk, where the manufacturer slightly increases prices.

Higher price increases were recorded for fruit in July, up 19.2% year-on-year, while vegetable prices rose 15.4%. The tenth largest increase was recorded in Greece in July in terms of prices at which potatoes are sold, by 23.4%.

The price of fresh milk increased year on year by 9.9%, above the growth at the level of the eurozone (8.4%) and the EU (8.9%), and yogurt by 11.4%. In fourth place is the price of beef, which has grown by 12.5%. The price of pork increased by 17% and that of eggs by 17.2%.
