"Green light" police from the Evros Prosecutor’s Office to establish road obstacles on the Egnatia highway

The Alexandroupoli prosecutor’s office gave the green light to the Evros police to install special barriers on the Egnatia highway in order to immobilize smugglers’ cars that drive in the opposite lane in order to avoid police checkpoints.

The document with the decision signed by the public prosecutor, which has already been sent to Alexandroupoli Police Director Lambros Tsiaras, allows the police to immobilize their cars with the help of anti-vehicle barriers, the so-called. road spikes acting against traffic moving in the oncoming lane.

As the document says, “to combat vehicles moving in the opposite direction, the use of mechanical means to damage tires, in order to achieve forced immobilization, is considered legal, permissible“.

It is also proposed to use the well-known number “112” to warn drivers on dangerous roads about the presence of smugglers, carriers of illegal immigrants.

And although it was decided to immediately put into effect the decision of the prosecutor’s office and set up anti-vehicle barriers from Evros to Kavala, on Monday there was another incident with a trafficker of illegal immigrants on the vertical axis of Ardani-Ormeni. An smuggler carrying illegal immigrants, while trying to escape from police posts, moving from Likofi, crashed into the security barriers at the entrance to Dadias, crashing the car and destroying the security barriers.

He was reportedly unharmed and fled to Dadia National Park. Border guards are “combing” the area to find and arrest him, but it is suspected that he has escaped from a well-known entry point for illegal immigrants.

In a similar location, in the village of Doriko, near Alexandroupoli, a fire broke out around 3:00 am on Tuesday in an area that is… a border crossing for illegal immigrants. This is the second fire in the area after a fire broke out in the same area at about the same time a month ago. Due to strong winds, the Alexandroupoli fire department was immediately mobilized with five vehicles and several firefighters who managed to bring the fire under control.

The fire started from a stream and burned about 45 acres. The most likely cause of it is the presence (probably due to cooking) of illegal immigrants who constantly move in the area.
