The Greek river Pinios was flooded with crayfish and crabs. This suggests that the ecology recovered when the enterprises that dumped harmful effluents into it were closed.
It is known that crayfish are particularly sensitive to pollution and lack of oxygen in the water. The inhabitants of the river disappeared from it back in 1997, due to the unfavorable environmental conditions prevailing in the reservoir. Today, most of the factories in the area have closed and “nature has perked up,” according to tirnavospress.gr.
According to amateur fisherman Tanasis Katsanis, the number of crayfish has increased in the waters of Pinios over the past five to seven years. The Rufrakti dam in the village of Girtoni also plays a decisive role in this. “I leave the crayfish where I found them, so that in subsequent years their population will increase. And I think it’s right. Every conscious person who cares about natural resources should do this, ”says the amateur fisherman.
