Samaria Gorge: Two tourists rescued after ignoring quake ban


Two young tourists were taken from a dangerous place in the Samaria Gorge after they ended up there, ignoring a ban on visiting the nature reserve announced in connection with the earthquake in Crete recorded the day before.

Four tourists from the United States tried to cross the Samaria Gorge, despite the restrictions imposed due to the 4.9 magnitude tremors that occurred on Sunday August 13 in Crete.

A 45-year-old Spanish tourist was also seriously injured by a rockfall in the Samaria Gorge, who is still being treated in a hospital in Chania. The man had part of his leg amputated.

According to information from the website cretapost.gr, four pedestrians lost their way and ended up in the dangerous zone of the canyon, in Linoseli, where the terrain is difficult. While trying to cross the gorge, the girl had a panic attack, as a result of which two tourists were stuck in place, and two others found a way to leave the place and call for help. 11 firefighters arrived at the scene with 4 vehicles, which took the couple out of the danger zone.

As a reminder, the new decision of the Organization for Environmental Protection and Climate Change, announced on Tuesday, Samaria Gorge will remain closed until Friday due to seismic activity (aftershocks).
