Paper tickets in the subway and buses will no longer be used

Paper tickets will become a thing of the past as the Greek authorities intend to introduce a new electronic method of paying for public transport.

The General Secretary of Transport, Yiannis Xifaras, has given clarifications regarding the cessation of the use of paper tickets by passengers, following the respective announcements made by the competent Minister Christos Staikouras. As Mr. Xifaras mentions in his interview, paper tickets will be phased out. Specifically, the official said that paper ticketing will remain an option, but due to the rise in credit card and mobile phone use, it is expected to be significantly reduced.

However, as Mr. Xifaras emphasizes, an innovative and important intervention is that the new system will be able to provide the passenger with the best possible package of services. So, if a passenger used urban transport less than provided for on the basis of a monthly card, and accordingly paid more money, the system will calculate itself. Thus the system saves passengers money.

As for such a thing as stowaways, Mr. Xifaras stressed that the electronic ticket will help up to a certain point. Currently considers ways to solve this problem while strengthening control.

As to whether When will this initiative be implemented?it is noted that procedures for the implementation of the project are already underway. Initially, it is expected that ΟΑΣΑ will make changes to the contract with the ΣΔΙΤ contractor, and the goal is to sign a contract in the fall.

To implement the system before the end of the year, a pilot system was installed on bus routes to the airport for familiarization and possible improvements. Payment will be made through an NFC reader system, which is equivalent to POS.

What is NFC, “Athenian News” described in more detail in the relevant material. Deciphering the abbreviation NFC is translated into Russian as “near contactless communication.” From the name, one can immediately conclude that one of the main features of NFC is that data is transmitted at a very close distance, up to 10 cm. Of course, nothing prevents the exchange of information at a distance of several centimeters via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, but here it is worth understanding the details. How to check if you have NFC on Android?

There are three proven ways to find out if your phone supports wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile networks, and NFC. And where to start depends on the amount of free time and the desired result. If you need accuracy, the official site is suitable. With speed, there will be no problems with the “settings” section, but diagnostics are already being carried out through third-party software.

It is worth noting that the NFC system is present on most new phones from 2021 in the middle and upper class, and only on some models of the higher price level from earlier years of release. This system is definitely not available on push-button phones.
