To restore the economy, Ukraine wants to return home their women

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 2.8 million able-bodied women left the country and now live abroad. Their return back will give a chance to restore the destroyed economy.

How writes Bloomberg, referring to the opinion of experts, if it is not possible to return at least some of them, it will cost Ukraine 10% of its pre-war GDP – up to $ 20 billion a year. Note that this is 6 billion more than the annual $14 billion included in the four-year package of assistance to Ukraine proposed by the European Union.

In addition, after the start of the invasion, the demographic situation in the country became even worse than before the war, when the Ukrainian birth rate was estimated at 1.2 and was considered one of the worst indicators in Europe.

The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine told the publication that returning women with children to Ukraine is “the most important task now for the Ukrainian government.” Work is already underway on legislative incentives that will facilitate this. The government states that there will not be enough people to carry out the post-war reconstruction plan.

The Politika Strana Telegram channel notes that in fact, discussions on the topic “how to return refugees to Ukraine after the war”, “where to get so many workers to restore Ukraine” and how to solve the demographic problem are completely pointless.

Much will depend on whether and how much will be invested in economic recovery. If they are meager, not exceeding the pre-war level, and the economy will be represented by those sectors that will survive during the war (agriculture, food processing, mining, infrastructure), then the current number of Ukrainians to serve such an economy will be excessive.

In the case of large investments, new enterprises will be opened and old ones restored, there will be a large demand for labor, and refugees will begin to return, realizing that they will have jobs and wages.
