K. Mitsotakis on fires: "Blame the climate crisis"

The Greeks reminded the prime minister of his remarks about the fires in 2021 and asked the question: “Why has nothing been done to prevent another catastrophe?” To which the answer was: “The climate crisis is to blame.”

Against the backdrop of the most powerful fires that literally destroy Greece, a traditional discussion has flared up in society about who is to blame and what to do. The media recalled the statements made by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in August 2021 in connection with the devastating fires in Attica and Evia. Two years ago, the prime minister, as he did a few days ago, tried to justify the government’s inaction in fighting the fire in Attica by blaming the “climate crisis” for everything.

He even called for the term to be used instead of “climate change” because the crisis is more dramatic. And of course, the ministry did just that, and Vassilis Kikilias became the minister. In particular, he noted that the government had and still has the goal of protecting the environment, and referred to an attempt at de-legitimization. “The new climate law, the first in Greece, will be passed in the coming months,” he said in early August 2021. “We are in mid-August and we have difficult days ahead. We are here to talk about everything: how we were protected, what mistakes we made, but above all, what this test has taught us. The climate crisis has arrived, and it shows us that now everything must change.”

From economic orientation to energy policy

It turns out that only man makes mistakes, not nature,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in his opening remarks. He added that he was ready for “bold decisions” that we have yet to see two years later. He even blamed the heat wave for this: “For 7 days we had a high temperature that turned the country into a powder keg.”

The prime minister also said that, of course, many fires of recent days were the result of arson, but whether this was an organized plan remains to be seen by the judiciary. And the investigation was carried out… (And where are the results?).

Justifying his accusations about wind farms, he responded by blaming “anti-vaxers”

The Prime Minister went on to talk about the transition to a zero-emission economy using the sun and the sea. “We don’t have to burn forests to build wind turbines (but we did in the end), we can build them in forests. This demonization of wind turbines is just the opposite. Wind turbines are not enemies, they are allies,” he said. Adding at the same time that “anti-vaxxers took these theories into service.”

However, he went on to state that “fossil fuels must be replaced by something, in the medium term it will be gas. In the long term it will be the sun and wind (obviously referring to wind turbines).” Answering a question, the Prime Minister spoke about investments in wind and solar energy. He said that “we need to look at where such facilities can and should be built, what are the rules so that these investments go without harming the environment.”

The new direction, he said, is to place wind turbines in the seas, but this must be done with a plan in mind so that they can supply the country.

Kyriakos Velopoulos, a right-wing Greek politician, MEP, former Greek MP, writes: “For many years in Parliament, I have said this … thousands of times: forests are not burned just to put windmills, the problem is that huge propellers cannot be delivered to the mountains (180 meters each), so the mountain must … straighten up! KEEP LYING TO GREECE AND GREEKS, DEALERS … WIND TURBINES! #GOAT? #Rhodos #Fireworks #FireworksRhodes”.

PS The author of the publication took part in many discussions in social networks on this issue. And I realized one thing: the problem is much more complicated than it seems at first glance. But the solution to this problem is in the hands of the people of Greece themselves. Without putting things in order in fire hazardous places, without cleaning and cleaning the forest, without self-discipline, which consists primarily in not kindling an open fire in fire hazardous places, and in the event of the impossibility of carefully preparing fire fighting measures. Don’t end up throwing cigarette butts and glass bottles on the side of the road…

And most importantly – to make it impossible to build on the sites of fires. The forest burned down, which means that a national park is being broken up at this place for 50 years. And no construction on this site – no solar power plants, no windmills, no housing, N I C E G O. In 50 years, the authorities and local residents will decide the fate of this place. I understand that maybe it sounds illogical and even absurd, but there is nowhere to retreat further, only the desert lies ahead.
