Greece: hottest day in years expected today

In Central and Southern Greece, 43-44°С is expected (in Thessaly up to 44-45°С), from 25°С to 43-44°С will be in Western Greece, 26-38°С in the Cyclades and Crete (up to 44°С in southern Crete), from 25°С to 40-42°С on the islands of the Eastern Aegean Sea and up to 40-43°С in the Dodecanese. The wind is changeable, with a force of up to 4-5 points on the Beaufort scale and in some places up to 6 points, it will contribute to the emergence and spread of fires, warns CNN Greece.

How to protect yourself from the heat:

  1. Avoid sun exposure, stay in shady and cool places. In case of forced exposure to the sun, it is necessary to use a hat and dark glasses. Choose loose, light-colored clothing made from lightweight cotton fabrics.
  2. If possible, avoid physical overwork and work during the hot hours of the day.
  3. Drink plenty of cool water or natural juices. Avoid sugary sodas and alcoholic drinks.
  4. Eat light, low-fat meals, divide the daily ration into several small and frequent meals.
  5. Frequent cool baths and cold compresses are recommended.
  6. Those taking medications, especially diuretics, tranquilizers, antihypertensives, antihistamines, beta-blockers, etc., should be in constant contact with their physicians for appropriate guidance.
  7. Those suffering from diseases of the cardiovascular, central nervous and respiratory systems, diabetics, alcoholics, as well as those suffering from all kinds of serious diseases should be in constant contact with their doctors.
  8. Residents of the center of Athens need to limit their movements during the hot daytime hours, these areas are experiencing increased air pollution and increased traffic.
  9. Vulnerable categories of the population (infants, preschool children, the elderly, pregnant women, obese, etc.) should strictly observe safety precautions and immediately consult a doctor if symptoms such as dizziness, headache, vertigo, drowsiness, behavioral disorders, nausea, vomiting, convulsions and others occur.
