Stefanos Tsoumakas: “Builders and wind turbines are to blame for the fires”

The causes of the mass fires on Thursday evening were discussed by the candidate for the presidency of the SYRIZA party, Stefanos Tzoumakas, who came to the conclusion that fires occur on “land plots, cottages, enterprises, hotels, solar and wind power plants.”

According to Tzumakas’ “analysis”, almost 8 out of 10 fires are caused by “selfish interest in changing the nature of land use”. The presidential candidate SYRIZA first said: “What kind of fire starts by itself? It is kindled by people. Only 5-7% – due to negligence.” To the remark of those present that fires also arise from electrical transformers or as a result of a natural process, Stefanos Tzoumakas replied: “The rest are arson. If you count everything, then up to 15% from natural causes.”

S. Tzoumakas insisted: “Why ΔΕΗ did not cause fires in Tsumerka, Western Macedonia, Thrace, Smolik? Because the land there is of no value. But forests in the suburbs of Athens are of high value, and they must be burned to change land use. It is no coincidence that fires have been blazing in the suburban forests of Attica for decades. And for those who are not yet convinced, Stefanos Tzoumakas concluded his “analysis” by naming the five main causes of fires:

• the first – land plots with a construction ban, in respect of which there are interested parties,
• the second – country houses,
• the third – various enterprises.
• fourth – hotels,
• fifth – new solar and wind power plants.

Despite Tzoumakas’ fierce criticism and accusations of lying, his opponents have nothing to say, as they do not have the kind of analysis of the fire situation that most Greeks consider abnormal.
