About the weather for the next few days: strong winds, extreme temperatures, the threat of fires

Meteorologist Clearchos Marousakis warns of a high fire threat and a new heat wave heading towards Greece.

He says that on Wednesday 19 July, against the backdrop of a strong wind, there are especially favorable conditions for the “emergence and spread of fire.” It will be cloudless and hot throughout Greece, and from tomorrow, Thursday 20 July, temperatures expected to rise due to the new wave of heat:

“In the next 24 hours, meltemia slightly cools the hot air from the heat. The main characteristic during the day will be strong northerly winds in the Aegean and in the east of the mainland. The lower part of the atmosphere is very dry and hot. Combined with intense melting, this fuels the fires. Conditions are very favorable for the emergence and spread of fire. We must be very careful. In the mountains in the north of the mainland, there is a possibility of local showers.”

The meteorologist warns: a new wave of heat is coming from tomorrow: the temperature will rise, the thermometer will again rise above the 40 ° C mark.

According to the National Weather Service, July 19 the weather will be clear. The north wind will blow with an intensity of 3 to 5 on the Beaufort scale. In the Aegean Sea and in the east of the country, the wind force will reach 6-7 points in some places, gradually weakening in the evening.

The temperature will rise slightly:

• in the northern regions of the continental part of the country, 37-38 ° C is expected, in central Macedonia in some places up to 39 ° C;
• in the east of the continent 37-39°С:
• in the west of the mainland 38-40°С, in the western Sterea and in the northwestern Peloponnese 41°С;
• on the Ionian Islands 38-39°С, on the eastern islands of the Aegean Sea, Dodecanese and southern Crete 36-38°С.

Attica

Clear sunny weather. Wind northeast, from 4 to 6 points, and east until noon, in some places up to 7 points on the Beaufort scale. The air will warm up to 27-38°C, in the east the maximum temperature will be 2-3 degrees lower.

Thessaloniki

Cloudy, variable, and from noon the south wind will be from 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale. Air temperature 23-36°С.

Thursday 20 July

Clear and slightly cloudy afternoon in Macedonia, local showers possible, mostly in the mountains. In the Ionian Sea, the wind is west, in the Aegean Sea – north, with a force of 3 to 5 points on the Beaufort scale. In other areas, the wind is variable. The temperature will rise, the thermometers will show 40-42°С on the continent, in some places 43°С. On the Ionian Islands 39-41°С, on the eastern islands of the Aegean Sea and the Dodecanese 37-39°С.

Friday 21 July

Clear weather with some and temporary overcast in the afternoon hours in the eastern and northern continental regions. Local rains are possible in the mountains of eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The wind in the Ionian Sea is western, in the Aegean Sea it is northern, its intensity will be from 3 to 5 points, in the southeast of the Aegean Sea locally up to 6 points on the Beaufort scale. In other areas, the wind is variable. Temperatures will rise significantly and fluctuate at high levels. On the continental part of the country, 41-43°C is expected, in places in the interior of Thessaly and the mainland up to 44°C, on the islands 41°C.

Saturday 22 July and Sunday 23 July

Clear cloudless weather. The wind in most areas is western, from 3 to 5 points, in the southeast of the Aegean Sea, north, in some places 6 points on the Beaufort scale. On Sunday the wind will gradually change to the north/northwest. The temperature will reach 41-43°C in the continental regions of the country, in places in the interior of Thessaly and the mainland 44°C, on the islands 38-41°C.
