On Monday, a fire burned down a shelter for stray dogs and cats in southeast Attica, with an unknown number of animals burned to death. Only seven dogs and one cat were saved.
Through social media posts, the owner of the FAZOO shelter in Lagonisi called for volunteers and drivers to help shortly after the fire broke out in Neos Kouveras, as strong winds quickly spread the flames.

As a result, two volunteers, risking their lives, literally “jumped” into the fire and managed to save the dogs and the cat. Both people and animals were burned.

Τελειώσαμε… Κάηκε το καταφύγιο fazoo farm στο Λαγονήσι. Σώθηκαν μόνο 7 σκυλιά και μια γάτα με εγκαύματα… Δεν τα καταφέραμε… Τραγικό😡😡 pic.twitter.com/RZJ6yEoqf7— fey karra (@karmatsa60520) July 17, 2023
And although this is not official data, some reports say that 14 animals were burned alive, and others posted later that the loss was 40 cats and 25 dogs. A few hours later, the owner of the establishment, Marianti Zabeta, wrote on social networks: “We burned. The end.” She thanked the volunteers Tetiya and Elena, who did their best to save as many animals as possible.
It is noted that animal lovers who responded to the call “FAZOO” through social networks tried to get to the shelter, but complained that the police did not let them in, as there are clearly no safe ways to evacuate all kinds of animals.

Έδιωχναν τους κατοίκους, έκλεισαν τους δρόμους κ δεν άφηναν να πλησιάζουν εθελοντές.

The state’s help in saving animals during the fire, which has been blazing since 12:30 on Monday, was that the General Secretariat issued an announcement saying that volunteers can call for information on a certain number.
The FAZOO animal shelter in the Athens suburb of Lagonisi has been operating for the past 12 years. Marianti Zabeta later wrote about it on social media:
“For so many years we’ve been begging for shelter… now we won’t beg anymore… 10 [животных] left…and I don’t know how many ran away…because we opened the doors for them to leave…about 14 burned down…now the TV channels are calling us to make a “hot” story. After this catastrophe, I’m just finished… I only want to die… but I won’t die, because some survived. It’s just me and animal welfare are over.”
