According to EUROSTAT, residents of Latvia, Bulgaria and Slovenia who have reached the age of 65 spent 10% of all overnight stays on tourist trips.
The indicator line below – only in Malta – 9%. In Estonia and Lithuania, people of retirement age are more active tourists, where this figure is 11% and 12%, respectively. The highest percentage in the total flow of tourists was registered in France and Cyprus (25% each), the Czech Republic, Greece and Sweden (24% each), Ireland and Portugal (23% each).
In 2014, people over the age of 65 spent 1.2 billion overnight stays on tourist trips – 20% of the total in EUand their travel spending accounted for 16% of total tourist spending, at an average of 52.6 euros, 12.7 euros less than tourists spend in the EU on average.
In Latvia, Estonia and Romania they spend 7% of their total spending on tourism. This indicator is lower only in Lithuania (5%) and Bulgaria (6%). The highest rate is in Ireland (21%), Germany (19%), the Netherlands and Portugal (17% each).
Older tourists in the EU prefer local destinations in their country (66%). This trend is observed in most EU countries, including Latvia (55%), Lithuania (49%) and Estonia (41%).
