Mounted police in the center of Athens and exams for civil servants


Mounted police will appear in the tourist center of the Greek capital. The first police officers on horseback, in the amount of 6-8 law enforcement riders, will appear on the streets of Athens at the beginning of 2024.

Mounted police will not only be present on the streets of the tourist center of Athens, they will also accompany the ceremonies and receptions of state officials. Notis Mitarakis, the Minister for Citizens’ Protection, has already signed a draft presidential decree, which will be submitted for approval, regarding the establishment of a mounted police force for tourism and ceremonial purposes in the center of the Greek capital.

At the same time, the minister mentioned the university police, which is fully integrated into ΕΛ.ΑΣthat is, the special body created with the recruitment of 1060 special guards in the previous period of government is abolished.

Mr. Mitarakis told accredited journalists that recruitment outside the national exams is nearing completion. A plan is being studied for the substantial training of those special guards who have been recruited so far through other procedures, so that they can join the ΕΛ.ΑΣ, as prescribed by law, in carrying out their mission of fighting crime.

Regarding recruitment to the police, the minister explained that the last will be 150 border guards, who have already been appointed. After that, all recruitment to the police will be carried out through Πανελλαδικών.
