Green light for 250 electric buses in Athens and Thessaloniki

The public transport bus fleet of Athens and Thessaloniki is on its way to renewal as the signing of the contract for the first 250 electric buses has been approved by the authorities.

During the pre-contractual review, the contract plan for the supply and maintenance of 250 city electric buses for one year was approved. “Renovating the public transport fleet is a priority ministries to improve the quality of service to citizens. The signing of a contract for the first 250 electric buses for Athens and Thessaloniki is the first step in this direction, and we expect the first new electric buses in early 2024. Later, another 400 buses are expected to be delivered, and 650 buses will be purchased during the second phase of the purchase. All new vehicles will be equipped with protection technology to limit the impact of vehicles on the environment,” said Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in charge of transport, Cristina Aleksopoulou, emphasized: “Strengthening the urban transport fleet of Athens and Thessaloniki is the commitment of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, included in our government program: the purchase of a total of 1,300 buses with anti-pollution technology, of which the first 250 electric ones have already been approved and will arrive in a few months. This is our strategic planning for electromobility and road safety, areas that are our priorities for the next four years.”
