Volos: the family does not take the body of a relative from the hospital

Funeral expenses have become an unbearable burden for some families in Greece. Due to lack of funds, the relatives of Volos, who died in the hospital, do not take his body: “We have no money for a funeral.”

Employees of the Achillopoulio hospital in Voloska faced another human drama: the relatives of a 55-year-old deceased man declare their incapacity.

How writes Taxydromos.gr, this is not the first time something like this has happened in the hospital. However, each time it causes alarm and means the launch of a special mechanism:

  • Social services should conduct an investigation into the environment of the deceased.
  • Then report the results to the competent authorities.
  • When evidence is obtained that it is indeed impossible to bury the deceased at his own expense, consultations are held between the prosecutor and the municipality in order to carry out the burial at his expense.

The previously deceased man was hospitalized for several days in the Volosskaya hospital, but his health condition was irreversible. On Monday, July 7, he died, about which the hospital informed his relatives. He has five brothers. Representatives of the family who applied to the Volos hospital stated:

“We are poor. We do not have money. We cannot hold his funeral and burial. We also reported this to the police.”

At the Volosskaya hospital, they tried to explain to them that in such cases there is a certain procedure that must be strictly observed so that everything is done legally and on the basis of what is prescribed by law. And the body of the unfortunate was transported to the cold store of the hospital until the prescribed procedures are completed.

In recent years, cases of death of people and statements by relatives about the inability to cover the costs of funerals and burials have become more frequent. Public service workers, social workers, funeral services are increasingly meeting with families who are unable to cover the costs. In such cases, social services are the first to be called to help resolve the problem.

Typically, the intervention of a prosecutor is required to have the relatives sign the necessary responsible declaration that they are financially unable to bury the deceased, and then a process is initiated between the municipality and the funeral home so that the funeral can take place.
