The Municipality of Athens, along with other city halls, will open eight air-conditioned public spaces in different parts of the capital, in response to warnings of impending hot days.
Eight so-called “friendship clubs” will be open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, starting Wednesday and at least until Monday, when meteorologists expect temperatures to drop.
In order to protect the homeless from high temperatures, the Athens City Center for Reception and Solidarity (KYADA) outdoor work teams, consisting of social workers, nurses and psychologists, will continue their daily work during the entire heat wave, working outdoors in six shifts in the morning and evening, offering wholesome meals, cool water bottles and essentials. At the same time, they will inform people about the air-conditioned premises of the Municipality of Athens and the cool places of the city, providing useful information to protect against the heat.
They are located at the following addresses:
Weather service at the National Meteorological Observatory on Monday warned about rising temperatures in many parts of the country starting Wednesday. Civil protection authorities advise residents and visitors to Greece to avoid unnecessary walks, especially during the hottest midday hours.
Extra care should be taken when it comes to children and the elderly. Special care will be taken for the homeless animals of the city: the mayor’s office has placed 150 watering holes in different districts so that our four-legged friends can cool off during the heat.
