Clearchos Marousakis: "Calm, just don’t panic"

Meteorologist Clearchos Marousakis noted the panic among the population about the upcoming heat and is trying to clarify the situation:

“Let’s get some things clear about the massive heatwave because I do see a lot of panic among those I’ve been in direct contact with.”

The meteorologist, in a Facebook post, talks about recent days’ warnings of severe weather and high temperatures, and talks about new approaches to combat extreme heat.

Abnormal heat in our country, he notes, is not far off, it will become especially aggressive at the end of the week. This is a strong heatwave that will produce high maximum temperatures (approximately 41°C to 43°C). But not everything is so bad, the meteorologist notes with optimism, naming both optimistic and not very factors:

  1. Early morning temperatures will drop significantly, except in major cities.
  2. Relative humidity will fluctuate at low levels, hence the discomfort. In major urban centers, the situation will be more difficult, as early morning temperatures will be high, especially from Friday.
  3. The duration of the tense situation does not seem excessively long. Already from Sunday, a gradual de-escalation of the intense phenomenon will begin, which will be further developed at the beginning of next week.
  4. Western Greece will still experience warmer temperatures as it is closer to this very hot air mass. But in a more general de-escalation of the whole situation, we seem to be moving towards the 20th of the month, when western Greece will also take a deep breath of coolness.
  5. The good news is that this is the first such intense heat wave. Therefore, buildings, concrete, etc. have not yet accumulated a large amount of heat.
  6. Melting in the Aegean Sea and the eastern continental regions, as well as the mechanism of the sea breeze in coastal regions, will work beneficially.

“Greece has experienced extreme heat several times in the past. But after the deadly heat wave in 1987, our country found itself very heavily shielded. This was confirmed by the successive heat waves of 2021, which in many ways resembled the intensity of the 1987 heat wave. But what was the problem in 2021? Devastating fires! And here we must be especially careful, “- concludes Clearchos Marousakis.
